Though we've listened to this song innumerable times, here's something we didn' t know: When Ella Fitzgerald came to record this classic, she changed the words to suit herself:
- 'Cording to the Kinsey report
- Every average man you know
- Much prefers his lovey dovey to court
- When the temperature is low.
- But when the thermometer goes way up
- And the weather is sizzling hot
- Mr. pants for romance is not
- Cause it's too, too, too darn hot
- It's too darn hot
- It's too, too darn hot
It marked the first time the then-current Kinsey report would make an appearance into a song [the line got changed -- basically, eviscerated -- in the movie musical, however]. The breakout line on fancying men's pants, well, that had never occurred before in popular music [with the possible exception of this].
No comment on the current weather, but, well, is it too darn hot?
Cole Porter songs always reward one for scanning past the first set of lyrics! Take "You're the Top" for example-
