As Chuck Currie points out today, the American Family Association has backed down on its online poll about gay marriage. AFA obviously had hoped to stir up its conservative base in a frenzy of anti-gay sentiment and present the petition to Congress. But the online approach backfired when it was discovered and widely publicized outside AFA’s right-wing base (including this web log, if you will remember).
As one AFA official put it:
"We made the decision early on not to do [go to Congress], because of how, as I say, the homosexual activists around the country have done their number on it."
Well, too bad. Oh, those naughty homosexuals!
What great fun it would have been to witness the evangelicals at AFA swallowing a little crow to announce support for gay marriage. Morons.org went so far as to guess what such a news article might look like:
"Imagine our surprise," said AFA President Don Wildmon. "We certainly weren't expecting to be supporting homosexual 'marriage' any time soon," he said, making little quotation signs with his fingers as he said the word marriage. When asked the reason for the sudden change, going from being one of America's biggest pro-family supporters of traditional marriage to endorsing marriage for homosexuals, Wildmon said, "Well, we took a poll."
Alas, it’s not going to happen. Another lost opportunity in democracy.
